Traveling in India can be fascinating provided you take care of certain things. The following is an assortment of useful tips while exploring and traveling in India.

Clothing: It is always to wear long pants instead of shorts in India. If you are planning to buy light cotton trousers in India, do not pay more than 300 rupees. You can also buy comfortable kurtas, lungis etc in India in order to blend with the locals. Try to bring a week’s worth of socks and undergarments. Do not forget to bring at least one pair of decent pant and shirt in case you hit a nice place.

Beggars: Beggars are quite common in tourist destinations in India. Try not to be too generous while giving alms to beggars. A maximum of 3-5 rupees is fine. Also, give beggars money when you get in your car and are about to leave, otherwise you will be mobbed.

Guides: If you are visiting India for the first time, getting a guide is necessary. However, it is essential to negotiate the price in advance. Anything can be their starting point and bargaining is common. Also, look for the credibility of the guide. You can usually find many with little or no knowledge about the place. Beware of such crooks.

Hotel Booking: It is almost mandatory to make your hotel reservations well in advance, at least 1-2 weeks, especially in big cities. Make your bookings a few days in advance when traveling to smaller cities.

Long Distance Calls: “STD” booths can be found easily in India, so you can make long distance calls to save money. Usually, hotels may charge you a surcharge for making international calls.

Food: Avoid street food as they may not be fresh or prepared in unhygienic conditions.
Don't eat in a restaurant where there is no one else, as it may be an indication that food may not be fresh. Also, eat food only if it is served hot. Avoid tourist buffets, where the food is likely to have been sitting out. It is also advisable to avoid meat except in better restaurants. Veggies/rice/bread is a better option.

Water: Getting pure water in India can be tough. Do not buy bottles that have only cellophane seals. Buy branded bottles- Bisleri, Bailey’s, Yes etc. These bottles have both the hard plastic seal and a cellophane wrapper. Do not drink water if it smells bad. If you have any doubts you can use iodine tablets. Even if you find unsealed bottles in your hotel room, do not drink that water.

Health Issues: As there is so much to see in India, falling sick even for a day is not desirable. Hence, taking care of your health is of utmost importance. Follow the following tips to stay healthy and fit while traveling India:

Wash your hands before eating and after using the bathroom with Wash and Dry's, as they contain benzalkonium chloride.
Wipe out glasses and plates. If glasses don't look clean, drink soda straight from the bottle.
Eat a lot of yoghurt (curd) in the first few days to let your systems adapt to the local flora.
Do not forget to carry a good mosquito repellant.
